THE MID-SOMERSET ORCHESTRA
WINTER CONCERT

Handel: The Music for the Royal Fireworks
Haydn: Trumpet Concerto
Mozart: Symphony no 38 Prague

After raising the roof with George Frederic Handel’s celebrated The Music for the Royal Fireworks, written for George II’s major firework display in London's Green Park in 1749, the MSO welcomes young trumpet player Eliza Talman as soloist in Joseph Haydn’s famous Trumpet Concerto of 1796.

Eliza comes from Somerset, is a former pupil of Wells Cathedral School and now studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Prevented from performing the Haydn Concerto in Wells in 2020 by the pandemic, she is now more excited than ever to perform it with the Mid Somerset Orchestra! This popular work, full of unforgettable melodies, fully entered the repertoire as an essential item for all trumpeters following the adoption of modern trumpet technology.

The concert ends with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony no 38, first performed in Prague in 1787, a city where his music was immensely popular. The symphony stands out for its prominent use of wind instruments.
