The MSO captures the mood of national celebration as Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest serving monarch, reaches her Platinum Jubilee.

The central piece in the programme is Felix Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, first performed in 1842. Dedicated to Queen Victoria following its London première later that year, the symphony was inspired by a visit to the chapel ruins at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh and its associations with Mary Queen of Scots.

Queen Victoria also championed the work of Sir Arthur Sullivan. His overture to The Yeomen of the Guard (1888) presents melodies from the opera in the form of a seriously constructed symphonic movement.

The interconnection between European royal families has held considerable significance for Queen Elizabeth II. In recognition of this, this jubilee programme will include the celebrated Emperor Waltz (1889) by Johann Strauss II.

The concert will end with Sir Edward Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March no 4 (1907), strongly associated with ceremonial royal occasions.
