A war-time drama becomes an unsettling contemporary noir romance in German director Christian Petzold’s adaptation of the eponymous 1944 novel by Anna Seghers. When he comes into the possession of a dead writer’s documents, German refugee Georg escapes from occupied Paris to Marseille, hoping to get a passage out of the country. But once there, the dead man’s past keeps surfacing, including the mysterious Marie, his estranged wife, who begins to fascinate Georg.

“... stand-out acting paired with yet again hypnotising cinematography and...near flawless direction.” Goethe Institute Berlinale review
