Tom Stoppard’s witty and nimble translation of Chekhov's final masterpiece. This complex, vibrant, tragi-comedy observes a family on the brink of ruin and a nation on the brink of revolution. The old world is giving way to the new and the fate of the beautiful cherry orchard becomes a symbol of the fate of all the characters and of Russia herself.

This rare work is a paradox; equally frustrating and exciting, farcical and tragic, where the tragedy is inseparable from life's comic trivialities. Populated by colourful, vivid and unforgettable characters this much loved play comes to new life in a daringly fresh production that anticipates the regime change to come.

"A poem about life and death and transition and change," Peter Brook, 1981
