Verdi: Overture Nabucco
Borodin orch Glazunov: Petite Suite
Tchaikovsky: Symphony no 6 Pathétique

One of the most popular symphonies all time, Tchaikovsky's last symphony Pathétique of 1893, famous for its tempestuous first movement, foot-tapping march and poignant slow finale alternating resignation and despair, has, above all, the most fabulously memorable melodies presented in a structure of dramatic pace rarely surpassed in symphonic literature. Add to that the music's association, justified or not, with the composer's death in circumstances which have never been fully explained only nine days after he conducted its first performance, the ingredients are all there for an absorbing evening of unforgettable music.

The concert will open with Verdi's overture to his third opera Nabucco (1841), his first success which still holds a place in the repertory. The overture features the opera's celebrated chorus of the Hebrew slaves Va Pensiero.

Then, to set a Russian mood for the remainder of the evening, the orchestra will play Petite Suite (1885), the coming together of pieces written originally for piano by Borodin, one of the great original melodic minds of nineteenth century Russia, in skilful orchestral realisations by fellow composer and gifted musical amanuensis, Glazunov.
