The highlight of the Mid-Somerset Orchestra’s 2019 winter concert will be a performance of Haydn’s 1st Cello Concerto in C.

Soloist Joe Pritchard was born in Somerset and started learning to play the cello from an early age. A former pupil at the Menuhin School, including being Principal Cello of the National Youth Orchestra and reaching the Strings Final of BBC Young Musician in 2016, Joe has recently begun studies at the Royal Academy of Music. He has played solo with several orchestras in the south west and elsewhere. This is his 3rd engagement playing this particular concerto within the last 2 seasons.

Haydn’s concerto is now the most popular of his concerti for cello, but this was not always the case. It was missing believed lost until a copy was discovered at the Prague National Museum in 1961, 200 years after it was written. That notwithstanding, it has since become an essential part of every famous cellist’s repertoire.

The concert will also feature Warlock’s cheerful Capriol Suite, Wagner’s lyrical Siegfried Idyll written as a surprise for his wife’s birthday (Christmas Day) in 1870 and Schubert’s sunny 5th Symphony inspired by the music of Mozart.
