Based on a novel by John Steinbeck, the film follows the story of Cal Trask (James Dean) the son of a California farmer (Raymond Massey) who feels that his father favours his brother Aron (Richard Davalos). In an attempt to impress his father, Cal embarks on a business venture which brings him into contact with someone from the past- his estranged mother, now the owner of a brothel. To increase familial tension even further, Cal begins to fall in love with his brother’s girlfriend.

“…there are superb performances, most notably from young rebel Dean and Massey, and a wondrous sense of time and place that make this movie a classic of its time.” William Thomas, www.
