Cellist Anup Kumar Biswas, internationally acclaimed for performing Western and Eastern Classical music, will perform with international renowned singers Daniel Brevik (bass-baritone) and Jennifer Brevik (mezzo-soprano), both from Massachusetts. They are supported and joined by exceptional folk duo The Drystones, returning to Somerset from
their national tour promoting their latest album Apparitions.

Anup Kumar Biswas was born in West Bengal. At the age of six he went to a mission school in Calcutta before studying with Pierre Fournier in Geneva and Jacqueline du Pre in London. He has given concerts internationally, including Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall, St John’s Smith Square, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral, Riverside Studios, Carnegie Hall, New York and Grays Inn (where, in addition to a Vivaldi concerto, he played an Indian raga at the personal request of HRH the Prince of Wales).

The Drystones are a young duo making big waves on the UK folk scene. Combining traditional music’s timeless instrumental union of fiddle and guitar with technical mastery, and an unexpectedly large live sound, it’s no wonder they earned themselves a nomination for the 2018 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award. Since forming in 2011, they have played festivals across the country.

Strode College students have visited the Mathieson Music School, of which Anup is the director, for several years. The school provides a rounded education to children from the poorest backgrounds in India, and is entirely funded by donations and musical events like this.
